What your Meta ads really made you

4 minute read

Meta will report conversions with a straight face that your bank account has never met. You do not have to argue with it; you can just count.

The hosted Meta connection is not yet ready: its app is unpublished and reporting-permission testing is pending. You can prepare your link tags and inspect recorded journeys now; the platform comparison needs provider activation.

1. Label your paid links

Put utm_source=facebook and utm_medium=paid_social on your ad links (Meta setup). An fbclid on its own is not enough: Facebook can add it to organic links too. Meta's comparison includes only the Meta Ads channel, which requires a paid medium beside the click id or a recognised Meta source. These captured parameters classify traffic; they do not independently verify that an ad was clicked.

2. Read Meta's journey counts and platform claim

In "Where your sales came from", Meta's row shows the sales it touched, started and closed, from recorded orders and their journeys. Meta's reported conversion count appears separately in What each platform claims, compared with orders confirmed by Stripe or reconciled Shopify payments and attributed to Meta Ads. Orders without payment confirmation are separate. Attribution rules, missing visits and payment tracking can all contribute to a gap.

3. Revenue per campaign

Tag your ad URLs with utm_campaign (Meta can insert these for you with URL parameters) and the Campaigns tab shows each campaign's visitors, orders and revenue from your recorded visits. The Ads section has a separate campaign list with Meta's own impressions, clicks and claimed conversions. Known USD ad records also support spend, claimed revenue and platform-reported ROAS. Unknown, mixed and non-USD currency leaves combined dollar figures unavailable; re-sync old records that lack account currency. Site revenue is USD only, without conversion. These two campaign lists are not joined automatically; the claims comparison is currently per platform.

4. Check the payment source

This tutorial gets sharper when your revenue is cross-checked at the source: connect Stripe or the Shopify app to bring in payment or store records. Browser order events are self-reported. Check the connection guide's payment coverage before treating an order total as collected money.

The trial includes site tracking; Meta reporting still needs activation. No card. Add my site
